The French Bulldog is a small molossoid dog who seems to believe he is large in size! In fact, his gait makes him appear like a self-confident dog and ready for any challenge.

Origins of the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a direct descendant of the English Bulldog , crossed with smaller breeds, such as the pug and the terrier .

In this perspective it is defined as a dwarf bulldog and selected in this way in the United Kingdom, then exported across the Channel by Nottinghamshire lace embroiderers during the Industrial Revolution and introduced into French society, where it assumed nationality. At the end of the nineteenth century this breed arrives in the United States where it becomes really popular and is renamed  Frenchie .

Morphology of the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a small molosser, not particularly harmonious in form, rather stocky.

It reaches 35 cm at the withers and can weigh around 14 kg. The torso is short and broad, the neck is bullish, the head is very rounded and the muzzle is flattened. It has a very muscular and solid structure.

The triangular , bat-like, well set ears and round, large eyes are hallmarks of this breed. The hind limbs are protruded forward, as if it were always ready to attack. The tail is short and sometimes corkscrew.

The coat is short-haired, dense, and can appear as a mask, two-tone, uniform, brindle. The colors allowed by the standard are fawn, white, piebald and black.

Psychology of the French Bulldog

This type of dog is suitable for apartment living . It is a dog with a calm character , very affectionate towards his family, at times extremely protective. Suitable for contexts with children.

Instead, he shows all his distrust and sometimes intolerance towards strangers . Even towards other animals he does not show particular affection and if he were to live with them it is necessary to dedicate time to socialization from a puppy.

He loves to play, but he is not a dog with a lot of energy . He is rather sly despite being joyful and with a lively spirit and in any case prefers to be in company, he suffers a lot from loneliness.

Care of the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a very delicate dog . It does not tolerate temperature excursions, temperatures that are too cold or too hot are poorly tolerated by this dog.

In winter it is advisable to protect it with a coat during outings if the weather is harsh, because the hair is short and not sufficiently shielding.

In summer it suffers from heat stroke , also due to the conformation of its short-barreled respiratory tract, which does not allow rapid thermoregulation. This characteristic is typical of the so-called brachycephalic dogs , with a flat face, often also subject to colds and respiratory problems in general.

It is necessary to pay particular attention to the feeding, because the French Bulldog tends to gain weight easily . Therefore physical activity and a balanced diet are important to keep the dog in a state of well-being.

It can also suffer from spinal disorders , due to a slightly rounded shape of the back.

Beware of scams

Often blue or gray French Bulldogs are sought, with light colored eyes but these specimens are crossbred dogs, mestizos, for which false pedigrees are produced.

These crosses can be dangerous for the health of the dog , they generally suffer from alopecia, and also quite serious pathologies. It is strongly recommended not to pursue this illegal trade , in order not to create further demand that can be satisfied with an increase in supply.
