Doctor, how healthy?
To begin with, I am not a doctor, I am a registered dietitian-nutritionist. Dietitians are not doctors but we know more about nutrition than any doctor or nurse because that is our job. So if you want nutritional advice, you already know who you should go to.
As such, I am often asked: Doctor, how healthy? Which has led me to write this post. The first thing I tell you is what I have told you before, I am not a doctor. And in reference to what is healthy eating … let’s talk.
We all think we eat healthy, but a but behind us always lurks. I eat healthy but on the weekend I party. I eat healthy but I drink a few beers a day. I eat healthy but always eat some sweet after eating. I eat healthy but I have to force myself to do so. I eat healthy but… What is your but? Do you feel identified with any of these phrases?
So what is healthy eating? Let me tell you that it is NOT eating healthy. Eating a variety of foods is not healthy because I can eat fried eggs with potatoes and chorizo and although varied it is not healthy (due to the cooking method and because the chorizo is a processed meat). I can eat a Coca-Cola and a bag of hooks and although varied it is not healthy (due to the high content of sugars, salt and fats). (I will comment on the subject of sugar later).
Eating one fruit a day is NOT healthy eating (when the rest of the diet is a disaster).
It is NOT eating healthy to eat a salad at noon (when the rest of the diet is a disaster).
Neither is eating healthy to eat all light, organic or organic products since half (or more) of the products that claim to be all that are not (we will analyze some of them later).
So to conclude: what is healthy eating? Eating healthy is eating what we want, when we want within a healthy offer. No times a day, no quantities, no rules, obligations or prohibitions.
