Origins of the British Shorthair cat

It seems that the British Shorthair descends from feline specimens brought to Great Britain by the Romans and then crossed with English wild cats. The first certain attestations of the British Shorthair date back to 1871, during a feline presentation in London in which a breeder Harrison Weir presented a selection of blue-colored cats, and immediately they were given the name they still bear today.

After the Second World War the breed suffered many losses and to repopulate it some crosses were made with the Persian breed and with the French Carthusians. Only in 1979 was the British Shorthair breed recognized.

Morphology of the British Shorthair cat

The British Shorthair is a kind of teddy bear , with a nice appearance. The body is compact and muscular , it can weigh around 9 kg; the rounded head and the eyes large and wide apart. The eye color is particularly intense and can also be heterochromatic : blue, gold, yellow, green.

The hair is compact, thick, soft and short, its protection even for low temperatures. The coat can be single-colored, tabby, two-colored, tricolor, colourpoint. The colors allowed by the standard are black, white, chocolate, red, cinnamon, gray, blue, lilac, cream.

However, the gray / blue British Shorthair is the most sought after . This breed is also known as British Blue. The legs are short, strong and the tail is short and thin. He completes his training around the age of 2.

Psychology of the British Shorthair cat

The British Shorthair is a very quiet and tame cat who loves to be pampered. It is not particularly dynamic, rather sly.

He is particularly intelligent and knows how to make himself understood by his family, curious and easy-  going he interacts very actively when he is in company, even if not very talkative: in fact his voice is not very strong and tends to meow very little. With a good education and with patience he can also interact with other pets, counteracting his natural distrust and reluctance.
