Last week an article about Japanese food was published in La Vanguardia in which our colleague Juana Mª González collaborated. It was about advising on the healthiest dishes and how to combine a meal in a Japanese restaurant with your diet.
Japanese food is characterized by a choice of fresh food and dishes with light cooking techniques such as steam or the consumption of raw food. There are not many sauces or excess oil, so going to eat at a Japanese restaurant is one of the healthiest options when we leave home.
Still, we must be careful and not lower our guard:
- Beware of overusing soy sauce. It has a large amount of salt and in addition to being used to cook some dishes, it is also used as a dressing for sushi.
- The Makis, the rolls or the Nighiri have rice as their main ingredient. If we go overboard with sushi, we will be ingesting a large amount of rice so we should not abuse it. Better to accompany the Sushi with a salad or an Edamame (steamed soybeans).
- Be careful with the tempuras! Sushi or vegetables in tempura add additional calories when coating the product.
- Desserts are still desserts even if we eat in a Japanese. It is usually the highest calorie dish on the menus thanks to the sugar, flour and fat used in its preparation. Why don’t you order a dessert to share?
- Enjoy raw fish. The Japanese use tuna and salmon in many of their raw preparations. They are fish rich in omega 3, perfect for preventing cardiovascular diseases or improving our skin.
- Be careful with the consumption of oily fish if you are pregnant or breastfeeding! Tuna or salmon are large fish, so throughout their life they accumulate greater amounts of mercury than other smaller fish. For this reason, it is recommended to limit the consumption of these fish to once a week.
- Enjoy a seaweed salad. They are rare in our diet and add fiber, calcium, iron and multiple vitamins. Seaweed is widely used in Chinese medicine, but its therapeutic uses have been largely unexplored in the Western world. Preliminary studies suggest that certain polysaccharides called fucoidans, which are generally found in brown algae such as kombu and wakame algae, may have anticancer properties, although their benefit in humans is not validated.
- And we leave the consumption of the drinks for last. A beer or a wine, no matter how much it is from distant countries, still has the same amount of empty calories as a national beer. The recommended daily consumption of beer or wine by health authorities is ZERO. Make a responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages: you can always consume water with an alcoholic drink to reduce the amount ingested.
