The Yorkshire dwarf is an English terrier , with long hair, a curious face and a friendly gait. It is a pet dog, often styled in a funny way by its owners, which can fit inside a handbag.
Origins of the Yorkshire dwarf
This elegant dog originates from the English county of the same name, where it was selected through various crosses with the Maltese, Skye Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier breed, up to obtaining the breed known today in 1865. It is a terrier with all the characteristics of the case and was used to hunt mice in wool factories. It has also been used in mines due to its small size able to creep into small holes and find rodents, but also to signal any dangers for workers.Â
The instinct to hunt possible prey, sensing its possible presence, has
remained in the DNA even today.
Yorkshire dwarf morphology
The Yorkshire Dwarf is a small dog of harmonic proportions , weighing a maximum of 1.5 kg. In English this dwarf version is called ” tea cup ” because due to its small size it can fit in a tea cup.Â
It has a long-haired coat , characterized by a central parting that starts from the nose to the end of the tail, with a faded reddish-golden color, even if the root is dark tending to blue. The texture is silky, like hair, without the presence of undercoat.Â
The ears are triangular and straight and protrude from under the fur, the eyes are dark, bright and lively. The tail is cropped .
Yorkshire Dwarf Psychology
They are an intelligent breed that learns home habits quickly. He is very affectionate and loves to be pampered and included in family life. He is curious and lively, even if he does not appreciate long walks as they require an effort in agility and speed that is challenging for their small size, he likes to be able to play outdoors.Â
He manifests distrust of strangers by making himself heard by barking, while also lovingly coexists with other pets.
Yorkshire dwarf care
The long hair of the dwarf Yokshire needs to be combed and kept to size regularly, in order to avoid knots and possible infections. The Yorkshire dwarf can in fact be subject to inflammatory problems in the eyes and ears . Having no undercoat and having a very fine and silky coat , it suffers from the cold , so it is recommended to wear a coat in winter.Â
Compared to standard Yorkshire, the dwarf version has a shorter average life and requires more veterinary attention. The nutrition for these small dogs must be specific and well balanced.
