Characteristics of the Welsh Corgi
The Welsh Corgi is one of the most famous short-legged dogs , in fact it boasts its presence at the court of Queen Elizabeth II. There are two types:
- Welsh Corbi Pembroke : older breed, with a tawny coat
- Welsh Corbi Cardigan : more recent breed, smaller in size, whose coat can be of different colors, with the exception of white
Origins of the Welsh Corgi
The Welsh Corgi is classified as a shepherd dog , introduced in English territory, in Wales to be exact, but with different origins for the Pembroke and for the Cardigan: the first brought by medieval Flemish weavers, the second by the Celts in Gaul where it is been crossed with British shepherds. In the 19th century, crossings were made between the two types to reinforce their similarities.
Morphology of the Welsh Corgi
The Welsh Corgi is a small / medium-sized dog , which can weigh up to 14 kg for a height of 30 cm at the withers. The peculiarity of this dog is its structure: a well-proportioned and muscular body , with a fox’s head, on very short, slightly infrared limbs and rounded feet.Â
This gives it a very nice and curious look. The muzzle is pointed, with round and lively dark eyes , tense and rounded ears. The Welsh Corgi has a short , thick coat that is neither soft nor shaggy.Â
In the Pembroke the color of the hair is uniform, fawn, fawn black, some white streaks on the limbs or on the chest. All coat colors are allowed in the Cardigan .
Psychology of the Welsh Corgi
The Welsh Corgi breed demonstrates a very sociable and affectionate character . He is gifted with intelligence but also stubbornness, it is often difficult to convince him to behave differently. It is suitable for families with children and for living in an apartment . In fact, even if it is a working dog, it does not mind lazing around. Â
It also adapts easily to living with other pets. The only flaws,  it tends to bark a lot especially in the case of foreign presences or unknown noises and to make holes if left alone to get bored.
Care of the Welsh Corgi
This dog does not require special care and is quite resistant, with a life expectancy of up to 14 years. However, it is necessary to pay attention to its diet since the Welsh Corgi tends to be overweight and this would cause pathologies to the spine.Â
