Origins of the volpino

The volpino is an Italian breed of ancient origins:  it dates back to the Bronze Age and is a descendant of the European Spitz. It seems to have been the companion dog of Michelangelo Buonarroti  and it is possible to recognize it in the painting “The vision of Sant’Agostino” by Vittore Carpaccio, dated 1502. In the 1960s the breed was at risk of extinction , but fortunately today this problem no longer exists. .

Morphology of the fox

According to the standard classifications, the volpino belongs to the category of spitz-type dogs along with many other breeds that are particularly widespread on the Italian territory. They are sociable animals  but not very accustomed to training , therefore more suitable as companion dogs.

It is a small dog with  a harmonious and compact appearance, which reaches about 30 cm in height at the withers for 5 kg of weight. The coat is characterized by long hair and supported by a thick undercoat. We can find specimens with uniform colors of fawn and white . The muzzle is short and tapered, like that of a small fox, the ears are triangular and erect and the bushy  tail  is curled towards the back.

Psychology of the Pomeranian

Very affectionate, docile and intelligent dog , it is characterized by a lively appearance and an easy and dynamic nature. Suitable for families with children , he easily becomes attached to his household and demonstrates a strong sense of protection. Despite being mainly a companion dog, in fact, he  knows how to make himself feel like a house keeper .

He may tend to bark a lot and be exuberant and stubborn , but these are all flaws that can be corrected with proper education.

Pomeranian care

The volpino is a dog that is in good health and has a life expectancy of around 15 years. Its diet is very simple and provides a good balance of meats and vegetables. The hair is easily manageable and its glassy consistency protects it from dirt. It lives quietly in confined spaces , but needs daily walking to release its liveliness.

Attention only to a possible pathology of lens luxation (PLL), which is usually tested and identified by the breeders themselves.

Those who want to buy a volpino can easily find it in the farms  spread throughout the Italian territory. The average price for a specimen of good genealogy is around € 700.
