Origins of the Jack Russell
The Jack Russell made its appearance in the United Kingdom towards the end of the nineteenth century, more precisely in the county of Devon, where a reverend, John Russell, needed a small hunting dog that could fit in the saddlebags of the horse, from unleash at the right time to flush out prey spotted by larger dogs .
These needs were embodied by a coarse-haired dog belonging to a trader in the country, Trump, from whom the reverend began to select the breed with crosses with beagles and bulldogs.
Jack Russell morphology
The Jack Russell is a small-medium sized dog , longer than tall, whose height at the withers can reach 30 cm for a maximum weight of 8 kg.
It has an almost rectangular shape, the skull is flat and narrows towards a pointed muzzle. The nose is black and the eyes are almond-shaped , lively and attentive.
The ears are pink and falling back on themselves. The tail is straight when in an attentive condition. Its coat is short, smooth or coarse, the coat can be bicolor, tricolor or piebald. The colors allowed by the standard are fawn, white, which must be predominant, black and brown.
Jack Russell Psychology
The Jack Russell is a very lively and intelligent dog . It is defined as a bold, very self-confident breed that does not retreat easily. The character is extremely strong-willed and its temper allows it to be used in various activities of agility , hunting, truffle hunting.
It is not a dog for inexperienced therefore: if you have to choose for the first time to live with a dog it is advisable to direct your choices towards different breeds. The Jack is also a companion dog, very affectionate towards his family, with whom he loves to share all possible spaces and learns their habits by making them of him.
Not the best dog for sharing games and spaces with childrenand in any case, adult supervision is recommended. He develops a great sense of territoriality and protects his home by loudly signaling the presence of strangers.
He is not particularly friendly to other dogs , and therefore socializing as an adult can be more of a problem than a puppy. It adapts easily to apartment living , but needs to let off steam in breathless runs in open spaces. Beware that it is a terrier and therefore the instinct to hunt is always present, especially mice!
Jack Russell care
The Jack Russell is a hardy dog that does not require special care. The pathologies in which this breed can run are oculopathies, patella luxation, and necrosis of the femoral head. As already mentioned, it needs to be able to vent its liveliness in racing and if it is too sedentary it could tend to gain weight.
