Origins of the husky breed
The husky originates from Siberia , where it was raised by the Chukchi Eskimo tribe to pull sleds . This explains the fact that it has been highly selected to obtain fast, hardened , medium-sized specimens with a very compact and thick coat. Also the character had to be socializing both interspecies and intraspecies, since he had to “team up” with the other dogs .
The present day husky, however , is the result of a selection that took place in the United States following the importation to Alaska of some specimens from Siberia in the early twentieth century. These dogs, used for sled races, jumped to the fore in a relay race organized to transport a life-saving serum to the populations affected by the diphtheria epidemic in 1925.
Husky dog morphology
The husky is a medium-sized dog that can weigh around 28 kg for a height of 60 cm at the withers. It enjoys a harmonious, muscular, flexible and agile structure.
It is described as an ice-eyed wolf because it physically looks a lot like this wild predator, despite being smaller in size, and its distinctive feature is its eyes. Due to a genetic mutation, many specimens have heterochromia of the iris ; in other words, they have different colored eyes.
The husky’s coat is dense, robust, compact, semi -long , ideal for protecting it from the harsh climate for which it was originally intended. The coat can be two-colored or three -colored and the variants allowed by the standard are fawn red, white, gray, black, brown, cinnamon, bronze, orange. The ears are erect , like those of wolves, and the tail is brush-like .
Psychology of the Siberian husky
Despite his icy eyes, the husky is a very balanced dog, with a sweet and affectionate temperament but – to use a description more suitable for a human being – without fuss. He is reserved and does not show possessive towards his owner, but still suffers from loneliness and feels the need to share time and space with his family.
He has no watchdog manifestations ; indeed, his tolerance towards strangers is proverbial. He shows good sociality with other dogs, due to his nature as a sled dog. In order to live next to his family , he also adapts to closed spaces such as the apartment , but should be taken for a walk in the open air every day.
To educate the husky in socialization and obedience, the imprinting phase is fundamental . Like a good pack leader, the owner must show the right firmness. For this reason, this breed is not recommended for anyone who has no experience with dogs.
