When living with a pet, planning a vacation necessarily involves some more thought. If you opt to take it with you, before departure it is essential to gather information on the facilities ready to welcome it, as well as on the services dedicated to it to make the travel experience as simple and comfortable as possible. BorghiDog is the first reference portal in Italy for those who choose to spend their holidays in the company of their pets in Italian villages .

Through its website and its social channels, it provides tourists and travelers with details about the reception services offered by the villages in the seaside and mountain tourist tones, in order to promote pet friendly tourism.in these places rich in art, history, culture and tradition.

BorghiDog, how it works

The site collects a constantly updated list of the Italian villages that adhere to the initiative. Each hamlet refers to a card, which contains data and information relating to the reception services offered to those who travel with their pet in tow. 

The portal is organized in three different sections:

1. Destinations: here a map of Italy, highlighted by region, reveals which villages adhere to the initiative, referring with a click to the details of the respective services. There is no shortage of useful contacts to organize your trip , as well as various information from a geographical, historical and cultural point of view and indication of pet-friendly beaches .
2. Report village: the section contains an invitation to report potentially interesting places for pet lovers . The form to be filled in, in fact, offers the possibility of suggesting the free inclusion of a village on the site and making it known as #borgodog .
3. News: the range of information is completed by a series of articles dedicated to excursions and activities to be practiced in some of the villages belonging to the network.

The origins of the project

In Italy, also thanks to the increase in the adoption of dogs and cats in the last year ,  there are many people who wish to spend their holidays with their four-legged friends , but who – due to insufficient services, high reception prices or lack of adequate information – they are forced to entrust them to trusted people or to leave them in paid pensions. 

Starting from these considerations, in April 2021 a Lucanian team  composed of Adalberto Corraro, Carlo Magni, Gigi Poerio and Maria Angelica Gentile  launched the BorghiDog initiative: a site that aims to become a reference point for those who need to better plan their holiday with a four-legged companion in the most evocative villages of Italy.

Where BorghiDog is active

With over 6000 small municipalities present on the Italian territory  – many in the phase of “rediscovery” by slow and responsible tourism, and interested in implementing their own tourist offer – the BorghiDog basin is potentially very vast.

Currently, the Regions that have given their membership through the representation of some localities are Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Umbria and Basilicata . The goal is, of course, to expand the initiative throughout the country, in order to enrich pet-friendly tourist information with options and opportunities.  

” We are working ” reads the website “to join the villages in every region of Italy and allow pet friendly tourism to all lovers of the beautiful country and its fantastic villages, without giving up the company of our 4-legged friends “.

A further way to enhance the enormous heritage of history, art, culture, environment and traditions present in small Italian towns and, at the same time, implement the great potential of a tourism sector – the pet friendly  one – which requires services (essential, but appropriately reasoned) and well-conveyed information to function and grow.
