December 10 International Animal Rights Day

December 10 International Animal Rights Day

International Animal Rights Day is celebrated on 10 December, coinciding with the anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. An opportunity to raise awareness of the cruelties that loom over the animal world and reflect on possible solutions, within everyone’s reach.

Human and animal rights , united in a single event. Since 1998, International Animal Rights Day has been celebrated on 10 December , coinciding with the anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

An additional opportunity to reflect on the theme of animal welfare starting from a conviction: every living being has the right not to be harassed, imprisoned, tortured or killed for free.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

It was 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The document is based on the assumption that ” the recognition of the inherent dignity of all members of the human family and of their equal and inalienable rights, constitutes the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world “.

From that date, every 10 December, the world celebrates World Human Rights Day , established with the aim of promoting – at all latitudes – the implementation of the thirty articles from which the Declaration is formed.

The declaration of animal rights

Half a century later, in 1998, the British animal rights associations Uncaged (now known as the  Center for Animals and Social Justice ) and Peta (People for ethical treatment of animals) chose  to proclaim Animal Rights Day for the same 10 December. , to which the attribute of ” International ” was added in 2007.

The intent is impossible to misunderstand: to associate the theme of cruelty against animals with that committed against man, along the lines described by the Universal Declaration of the Rights of ‘Animal. Signed in Paris in 1978 at the Unesco headquarters, this declaration constitutes a Manifesto, the ten articles of which certify that:

  • All animals are custodians of the same rights ;
  • the life of each living being must be respected ;
  • no living thing should be subjected to cruel treatment or actions ;
  • education to respect for animals among citizens and, above all, in schools is a fundamental value, which must be shared and transmitted on a daily basis.

Although generally recognized in the various national communities, the declaration has no legal value, but provides ethical and moral guidelines regarding the behavior to be followed in respect of animals.
