Every time we turn on the TV or open a magazine we happen to hear or read something that has to do with what is good and what is bad.
For example, you have certainly heard of how red meat has become a carcinogen. In reality it is to the extent that the percentage of meat assimilated each week is too high .
For this reason today I would like to try to dispel some myths or some taboos about foods that are considered dangerous for one’s health. In fact in most cases it is completely out of control news.
Sometimes it would be enough to use common sense to understand for yourself where the truth lies, but if that is not enough, continue reading this article.
Also because, let’s face it, wisdom is the way to go and these lies are usually more fads of the moment.
It can be difficult to tell the truth from the lie so follow me on this path of “nutritional wisdom”!
For sure, a personalized diet would protect you from any surprises.
Egg yolks are full of cholesterol
Here you can not even eat an egg in peace that starts the usual story about the fact that it would be better to eat only the egg white, the egg white, much less tasty and throw the yolk, a food full of cholesterol. A part of this “lie” has its truth in the sense that the egg is an element rich in cholesterol but it does not hurt everyone and above all it is not that the egg white does not contain other strong nutrients.
A study by British doctors has absolutely denied that egg consumption can be linked to heart problems, strokes or whatever. A study by the University of Connecticut had instead found a positive incidence between the consumption of 3 eggs per month and the increase in the good cholesterol, HDL.
The fact that in the morning one is more perky with an American breakfast with eggs comes from the fact that the egg is one of those super nutritious foods, able to give you energy for most of the day.
Just, as I said before, don’t abuse it. So why do you have to give up eggs altogether, my friends?
Fat as an enemy
Another lie: fat hurts, it always hurts. It’s not true. It’s also not true because we see that everyone with weight issues who eat low-fat stuff doesn’t get super athletic in no time. If you are obese or have diabetes problems it is a big mistake. Because low-fat diets pump carbohydrates and carbohydrates raise blood sugar. A Swedish study two years ago with a sample of 16,000 cases concluded that a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet is the best way! Low-carb diets can improve good cholesterol and lead to improvements in glucose levels for those already struggling with obesity and diabetes. An American study on the effects of a low-carb diet on mood and hunger, he found that those on the low-carb diet lost nearly twice as much weight as those on the low-fat diet. The thing that I noticed in me, I noticed after studying all this research a bit, is that I am always hungry after a short time being granted a toast or a sandwich. So the carbohydrate sugar burns too fast. There is never that feeling of satiety that leads to not eating for a while. An American study more than 20 years ago it found a serious incidence among diets with more carbohydrates and diseases such as type 2 diabetes. So as usual it is not good to overdo either side but to play at being wise , as we have already said, and think about the quality and quantity of a food we like.
The calculation of calories
Another lie that sends me haywire is that of counting calories everywhere. Even in fast food, the calories are indicated so that a precise calculation can make you less fat a sandwich all seasoned like those. Counting calories is important, ok, but this does not mean that if a product is low in calories it makes more sense to eat it even if with zero nutritional qualities.
Let’s take some examples that have little to do with food but are explanatory: if I stay here at home and play with my smartphone rather than talking to my friend, it’s not really a quality time. If, on the other hand, you try to talk, to drink coffee, to take a walk together, then yes, that is a time that can be considered as well spent. So the calories: 30 M & M’s have the same calories as 150 grams of hard-boiled eggs. What is the quality food then? Your home cooked lunch will likely have more calories than a BIG MAC but your cooked meal will also have fewer fats, hormones and preservatives. How are you doing now? Are you hungry? The point is always quality. At parties we gorge on chips and fizzy sodas that suck because we’re hungry but those are empty caloriesand we don’t think there are a lot of foods that would give us a greater sense of satiety like potatoes or eggs or meat which are certainly healthier than sweets, ice cream and candy! Returning to the discourse of the lie about fat, an American study some time ago claimed that a smaller amount of fat was less effective than a few carbohydrates and this is also because we have to modify our metabolism by changing our stupid daily habits. So we try to always pay attention to the quality of the food we eat, the quantity, enough junk food and alcohol because those calories, our mythical calories, are useless, they do not nourish our body at all!
Choose the light version of a product
As with cigarettes, it’s not that if you take the light version of a supermarket product it hurts less, that’s our usual lie! The supermarkets are full, full of these lower calorie products. A fantastic example is butter: when consumed in excess, butter is bad for you but margarine does not hurt any less, on the contrary! The problem is that many of us think low calorie and healthy are synonymous, but that’s not true at all. A healthy diet is not only low in calories but it nourishes you, we said that. A British study found that the saturated fats in milk, cheese and meat produced have a protective effect while the fats found in margarine damage our bodies. I fell for it too: it was summer and I wanted to lose a few pounds and I found myself looking at the light products from the supermarket. I really like bread, butter and jam and I thought of margarine as an excellent choice for my breakfast. But then the taste was not the same, it tasted fake and I went to find out. A lot of doctors write that yes surely it is better not to abuse with butter but it is equally true that butter will always be better than a synthetic fat like that of margarine.
Seed oil for frying
The other big lie is to prefer seed oil for frying or cooking because it has a lower cholesterol content. Moreover, it is not even understood whether this fact of lowering cholesterol is really a factor in preventing heart disease. There are many other factors that serve to improve a patient’s condition and among these, in a Canadian study , certainly not the use of vegetable oil because it is rich in polyunsaturated fats, Omega-6 fats.
Omega-6 fats usually cause inflammation in our bodies, it can very easily increase the risk of chronic disease. A study, published by the US National Library of Medicine , found that most Westerners eat a diet free of omega-3 fatty acids, with “excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids”. They linked this imbalance to the prevalence of cardiovascular disease, cancer and autoimmune diseases. A British research has instead counted the many advantages of olive oil that protects the heart in a convincing way and maintains its nutritional values both when cooked and raw. Extra virgin oil has precise anti-inflammatory, emollient, protective and stimulating actions:
- on the pancreas for the production of greater quantities of digestive enzyme;
- on the gallbladder which provides to pour the bile into the intestine;
- on the mucosa that lines the internal surface of the stomach and intestines;
- on the liver for a greater production of bile;
- on gastritis and gastric ulcer because it has an effective protective action;
- on the body defending it from skin alterations;
- on the Nervous System as it lubricates the mind.
Olive oil, in general, keeps its promises, beyond the promotional campaigns of the moment. Also excellent for burns, regulates the intestine, has the same nutritional values as breast milk, even helps against constipation.
In short, in this long journey among the various food lies I have tried to carry on my experience in first person and I must admit that, over the years, I have come a long way. I never stopped to believe anything I read but I started to get really informed by working on myself and on my way of eating. So first of all good information on food, don’t necessarily believe in the marketing campaigns of large companies but trust your own common sense and wisdom, as I said before. In the end it is enough to know what the nutritional values of each ingredient are, to vary a lot and to live a healthy and sporty life, even without exaggerating. Because the Latins teach that in medio stat virtus.
For example, even this media fuss over the last few days about meat has been shocking. A bit like the discovery of hot water, of course, because it’s not that you don’t know that since the meat is treated anyway, it’s not very good to abuse it. But then what food eaten in excessive quantities does not lead to negative consequences? Do you think that if you ate kilos and kilos of broccoli, always those, your body would be happy?
So let’s try to live our life peacefully, with good food, which helps us stay healthy, cooked lightly, without exaggerating.
So I want to ask you: what are the culinary fads you have been victims of?
Is there something you have eaten or haven’t eaten for years thinking it is good or bad?
