Chronic fatigue and thyroid: what possible link?

Chronic fatigue syndrome makes “normal” life difficult. The causes could be multiple: maybe some thyroid problem? Maybe yes

Chronic fatigue and thyroid: what possible link?

There is a big difference between being sleepy because you slept badly (new mothers understand…), between being tired from illness or hard work , and chronic fatigue syndrome .

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is subtle, it haunts us at every moment of the day and doesn’t improve even after a night’s sleep.

There are several possible causes , science has not identified a single one at the moment.

Could thyroid disease also have a link to chronic fatigue syndrome? Yes, that’s why. With some help from homeopathy .

Chronic fatigue syndrome in adults: the thyroid gland among the causes?

The causes of chronic fatigue syndrome , which mainly affects adults, are not yet known to science .

Often the first appearance of chronic fatigue occurs after an infection (a cold, or, more frequently, mononucleosis or Epstein-Barr virus infection) or after a period of strong psychophysical stress, or surgery . In short, after an event that put a strain on our immune defenses .

However, we can also hypothesize a close link between chronic fatigue syndrome and the functioning of the thyroid, since the thyroid “controls” the production of hormones throughout the body , and therefore influences all the functions of the organism itself; it follows that in case of poor functioning of the thyroid gland ( hypothyroidism ) and therefore low levels of thyroid hormones, there may be a general slowdown or reduction in bodily functions .

Here are some examples of what happens when the thyroid “works less”:

  • The body produces less heat , it feels more cold;
  • The brain may work slower : there may be memory problems and a lowered mood;
  • The heart can slightly slow down its frequency , the circulation can consequently slow down and decrease the oxygenation (energy) of all cells. The feeling of tiredness therefore increases

The major symptoms of hypothyroidism (constant fatigue, drowsiness, low energy, drop in mood) are almost the same as those of chronic fatigue syndrome : here is the link between thyroid and chronic fatigue.

Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Adults

The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome appear suddenly or slowly : you immediately feel much more tired or the fatigue gradually but steadily worsens over weeks or months ( at least six months for a correct diagnosis to be made ).

Symptoms can be permanent or intermittent, and the main ones include:

  • Severe, constant fatigue and exhaustion
  • Frequent sleepiness that does not improve even after sleep
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Muscle and joint pains
  • Mild but constant fever
  • Mood disturbances
  • Mild visual disturbances
  • Numbness and dizziness

Sleepiness can also be linked to poor sleep quality, disturbed by pain or low-grade fever.

Depression , on the other hand, can appear among the initial symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, or it can develop later , given the prolongation of the disease and the limitations it imposes on daily, social and working life.

Chronic fatigue syndrome in adults: homeopathic remedies

In case of chronic fatigue syndrome, it is always good to refer to your doctor for a certain diagnosis , to rule out other pathologies and to identify the best treatment strategy.

Homeopathy can come to the rescue, with remedies that favor the “recovery” of the organism. Among the main ones we mention:

  1. Arnica , as a support for recovery after overexertion, joint and head pain.
  2. Hypericum , adjuvant in cases of poor memory, headache, pain and ailments that worsen following physical exertion
  3. Nux Vomica : in case of fatigue that worsens after exertion or stress, with symptoms such as joint pain, muscle tension, chronic headache and sleep disturbances
  4. Acidum Phosphoricum:  indicated to support the symptoms of real tiredness (asthenia), also emotional listlessness, as well as joint pain and headache
  5. Ammonium Carbonicum : in the presence of memory loss, fatigue, weakness, headache, sore throat and swollen glands
