WhatsApp will no longer work on Blackberry and other phones

The instant messaging service WhatsApp has announced that it will stop working on some outdated operating systems, including BlackBerry 10, Nokia Symbian S60 and others.

The bad news for Blackberry and companions is the result of the new WhatsApp strategy which aims to focus all resources on the mobile platforms that most people use.

So goodbye to old smartphones.

WhatsApp will no longer be available on older operating systems as of December 2016.

On the official application blog, WhatsApp explained that certain devices “don’t offer the kind of functionality we need to expand the features of our app in the future. It was a difficult decision to make, but the right one, in order to offer people the best way to keep in touch with friends, family and loved ones who use WhatsApp. “

So WhatsApp advises users to switch to a new , more modern device, to continue using the messaging service.

But how? Change phone for one application?

It may seem strange, but we are not talking about just any app. WhatsApp, a Facebook-owned messaging application, boasts more than 900 million users and more than 10 billion messages sent every day. And not many users will be willing to give it up.

BlackBerry can only take this blow. It will not only lose an app on its operating system, but a real giant capable of turning market trends around.

On which models will WhatsApp stop working?

Here is the complete list of operating systems that will no longer support WhatsApp as of December 2016:

  • Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
  • BlackBerry OS 7 and all previous models
  • Nokia Symbian S6
  • Windows Phone 7.1

Indeed, WhatsApp’s decision seems to make sense. When the application was born in 2009, “around 70% of smartphones sold were BlackBerry and Nokia”. But today the systems offered by Google, Apple and Microsoft account for 99.5% of sales. The rest are just crumbs, and WhatsApp – obviously – doesn’t care.
