What is fat shaming?
What is fat shaming? Fat shaming is someone’s mockery of their size. All overweight or obese people have often experienced some sort of bullying due to their size, which goes from implicit forms (glances, allusions to eating less or better, allusions to other people who are slim and fit) to explicit forms (reprimands, insults, derisions, discrimination that can be generically social, for example by friends, relatives or simple acquaintances or work, for example in the office).
For example, most obese people are victims of discrimination at work : obese women often receive verbal abuse, are underestimated in their work, and even underpaid.
We can enclose this whole universe of social problems related to obesity with the English neologism “fat-shaming” , which indicates a mechanism by which an obese or very overweight person is put (or even just overweight compared, for example, to some time before: typical in photos of celebrities who have put on weight, even little weight) in a state where they should be ashamed of their weight , and therefore we could call it “ridicule of fat”. A phenomenon that has recently reachedworrying peaks and that it does not concern the simple politically-correct, or the avoidance of discriminatory terms for the dignity of the person, but the opposite, the fact that it has had too many demonstrations in favor, and not against.
For example, the famous Project Harpoon campaign that targeted photos of overweight personalities and ordinary people to “put them on a diet” with photo editing, repost them on social networks and then write something like “wouldn’t they be better off thin?”.
Or again a case that has gone viral: that of Canadian comedian Nicole Arbor , whose video “Dear Fat People” (you can find it on youtube only in English) has gone viral thanks to the insults that the girl addresses to overweight people, with the apparent argument of keeping us healthy (“I’m not sorry for you because you take your body for granted. What are you going to do, fat people? Are you going to chase me? Can I run away from you just by walking at a moderate pace” ), actually speaking for a long time of disgust in view of other people’s fat.
