History and origin of  Mindfulness

Mindfulness is an English term that refers to the ability to stop and focus on one’s feelings. The term translates a word in the Pali language (Sati) which means conscious attention .

 Mindfulness draws a lot from Buddhist practices and emotional education. Awareness is achieved through proper education in meditative practice. 

Jon Kabat-Zinn , professor of medicine who has carried out an effective therapeutic integration with mindfulness, defines it as follows: “become aware and live in harmony with oneself and the whole world.

It involves self – inquiry , questioning our worldview, our position in it, and appreciating the fullness of each moment of our existence. Above all, it concerns maintaining contact with reality ”(Kabat-Zinn, 1997).

The Benefits of  Mindfulness

One learns to observe and recognize harmful thoughts, which do not allow the inner evolution of man or, in Buddhist terms, do not allow “human revolution”. A new way of being in one’s body joins the emotional awareness .

Description of the technique 

Stop and observe, without judgment. There are several types of meditation :   

  • Sitting meditation; 
  • Exploration of the body: it is a method that consists in the systematic rotation of the attention on the various parts of the body, focusing on each one; 
  • Walking meditation: technique suitable for those who cannot stay still, so while walking you try to concentrate with internal observation; 
  • Mindful Yoga  : technique that unites mind and body through specific exercises. 

The aim is, however, to activate a concentration that does not have a solution of continuity, remains serene and lucid. In other words, develop a quiet and lively presence. 

The initial phase of this process consists of two reflections: one is a reflection on personal  intention , the other is a reflection on motivation . By keeping these aspects alive, the practice is channeled into the right track.

Where Mindfulness is practiced today 

Born in 1979 from an idea of ​​Jon Kabat Zinn of the Medical School of the University of Massachussets , it is practiced in many hospitals in the United States and in Europe: it is in fact used as an analgesia for various forms of chronic pain, and also in cases of anorexia and bulimia.
