How to protect ourselves from GMO foods
How can we save ourselves from GMO foods? And what exactly are they?
Dr. David Schubert of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies has compiled ten ways to avoid GMO foods in our diets.
What are GMO foods?
GMOs are genetically modified organisms. For foods, these are foods that have been genetically enhanced or improved in the laboratory. For example seeds, vegetables and fruits.
Or that derive from genetically modified seeds: this is the case of vegetable oils which are then used in the food industry or seeds for crops or for the pasture of farm animals.
GMO foods arouse serious perplexity not only among consumers, due to the possible side effects of these genetic manipulations. The debate on GMOs is quite divisive.
Most experts say there is nothing to fear from GMO foods: among them, many scientists and Nobel laureates, and organizations such as the WHO.
Others, like Schubert, are not of the same opinion: they do not condemn GMOs a priori, but explain that greater control and more precautionary measures are needed for the health of the final consumer.
In the United States, for example, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine would ask doctors to advise against GMO foods for their patients. It must be said that in Europe the use of GMOs and the import of genetically modified foods is severely limited. You need to have an authorization that is obtained after passing a series of quality checks.
And that in general organic farms and certified organic crops do not use any genetically modified ingredients.
How to protect ourselves from genetically modified foods
- Choose organic and organic foods.
- Focus on fresh products, that is, of the day, for fruit and vegetables: they are hardly GMO foods.
- Shop in stores that display NO GMO brands.
- Find out about NO GMO initiatives and information campaigns .
- Beware of added additives, such as corn starch or soy lecithin.
- Focus on wild fish (such as wild salmon) and not farmed fish. Same thing for animal farms: there is organic, and the possibility of buying meat from organic farms that pay more attention to animal nutrition.
- Avoid consuming GMO-risk foods if you think they may harm you (such as soy)
- Be careful when eating out, avoiding corn and soy products.
- Choose foods that are high in fiber – most local whole grains are non-GMO.
- Avoid aspartame: it is a GMO food considered dangerous to health.
