Does bread make you fat? And how to eat less?
Two concerns that revolved around the consumption of bread were branded as false food myths according to the magazine Examine : the first concerned the fact that bread makes you fat and that it is harmful to health; the second concern concerned the idea that eating wholemeal bread is better than eating white bread. Have you ever wondered how much truth there is behind the speech related to bread?
Does bread make you fat? It has a high glycemic index so is it a food to avoid? And should wholemeal bread be preferred over white bread always and in any case? Let’s clarify in a few points.
BREAD MAKES YOU FAT AND OTHER COMMON PLACES
Does bread make you fat?
The first answer is: it depends how much you eat. Common bread, the one to be clear of durum wheat, prepared with water, natural yeast and at most a little oil, has 250 calories per hundred grams, therefore one hundred less than pasta, and like pasta it belongs to the category of complex carbohydrates. So if we ate a 100-gram sandwich instead of a one-hundred-gram plate of pasta, we would basically save 100 calories. So no, bread doesn’t make you fat per se. Bread makes you fat when we use it to make the shoe AFTER having eaten the hundred grams of pasta , and finally another piece that goes with the bread because we are not yet full. Clearly, the problem is that many people, instead of considering bread as asubstitute for pasta or rice or potatoes, they take it as an addition, as a neutral food.
It is not. The same people consider a stuffed sandwich as a snack. A sandwich is not a snack. It should not be considered as such even for children . The child in the middle of the morning, if he has had breakfast, cannot snack on a sandwich filled with cold cuts. To then have lunch two hours later.
At least he can do it if he will play soccer after homework in the afternoon or if he is underweight.
For adults.
How many times have you heard the phrase: “I kept myself light, I ate a sandwich for lunch?”.
If you eat a 50 gram sandwich filled with vegetables yes, you have kept yourself light.
If you eat a 100 gram sandwich with vegetables, sauces, mozzarella or tuna or eggs, it’s a 100% lunch.
If bread doesn’t make you fat due to calories, what makes you fat?
The answer is: for calories. Yes, because so far we have seen the common bread, that of durum wheat. The one from the bakery. But what bread do you eat?
