Coca-Cola Zero in crisis due to the Coronavirus
Sometimes tragic events reveal little food backstories that no one would imagine.
For example, today we are discovering for the first time that the sweeteners we use for Coca-Cola’s sugar-free alternatives, including Coca-Cola Zero, all come from China .
And now that imports are suspended due to the risk of a pandemic, Coca-Cola has said it is in trouble. The stock of the mix of artificial sweeteners in the drink is Chinese, and now they are running out. This is a supply from China that includes aspartame, acesulfame K, saccharin, sucralose and stevia glycosides. And now the famous multinational has found itself forced to declare its concern for the production of Coca-Cola Zero.
Wait a minute.
But what does this mean?
Is it possible that all the sweeteners on the market are actually of Chinese origin and that there are no other producing countries? It is not clear but it would be interesting to find out.
A story that reminds me of the bewilderment of the French, when at the turn of the Second World War they saw the escargots disappear from their tables. This was obviously before they were busy and had to worry about surviving. And it was from there that they discovered that already at the time almost 50% of the snails came from China, Turkey and Eastern Europe. Before that they were convinced that all snails came from Burgundy. Now, however, they are forced to protect them, already for thirty years. Or they would just import.
But the sweetener isn’t the only problem plaguing KO, the Coca Cola company. Another problem is the fact that China is the third largest consumer of the famous drink in the world.
Apparently, apart from listed pharmaceutical companies, the Coronavirus is causing everyone to drop stocks on the stock exchange.
