Acne
Introduction:
Acne is a term that is related to the skin infection. In it the fat deposits occur inside the pits formed on the skin mainly on the face parts that are cheeks, forehead and the chin and shoulders. The aggregation inside these pimples may be the sebaceous gland secretions. The bumps formed in this disease may be the whiteheads, blackheads and pimples. Acne mostly occurs in the teenagers and the older children going through puberty. In this phase of age the hormones trigger the production of oils by the oil producing glands. Acne can be prevented by the correct intake of diet. The foods rich in complex carbohydrates, zinc, vitamins A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants are useful to prevent such condition. This article discusses the causes, types and the dietary intervention to prevent and cure acne.
Types of acne:
There are three main types of acne:
Pimples: It is a pore that has an opening allowing the bacteria, oil and dead skin cells to get under the skin. They usually appear as red bumps with an extruding top material.
Blackhead: It is a pore with a black top that is clogged but remains open. It appears as a tiny dark spots on the skin surface.
Whiteheads: It is a pore that is clogged and is closed. It appears as a white and hard bump on the skin.
Causes of acne:
Acne condition is mainly related to skin infections mainly by the bacteria of staphylococcus aureus. It mainly occurs when the skin pores clog up with dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria. During puberty, when the children are inclined toward adolescence, the sebaceous glands under the hormonal changes start to produce more oil than before thus increasing the risk of acne.
Beneath our skin, there are sebaceous glands that are connected to the outer environment through small holes. These holes are called pores. Sebaceous glands produce sebum that is carried through a stalk known as follicle to the upper skin pore. When the oil is pumped upward it also carries the dead skin cells with it to the outer surface. When these dead cells along with oil droplets get stuck to the pore opening and causes acne.
Diet also contributes to acne (Avoidable-diet):
Diet is also one of the factors that may intensify the acne-condition. There are many diets that shouldn’t be consumed in order to avoid acne. These foods certainly raise your glycemic index more than the others. When there is high glycemic index of your blood, there is high insulin production that compels the oil glands to produce more oil causing acne. You should avoid the following diets while preventing acne:
High-glycemic index foods:
Some foods may have high glycemic index:
Pasta
White rice

Sugar
As these foods are made up of simple sugars, so these cause high spikes in the insulin level. This section may involve the highly processed foods that can be easily broken down to simple sugars. Anything white or refined should be avoided.
Milk and Milk-products:
Milk proteins such as whey and casein have also been linked to the acne risks. Dairy products promote the release of growth factors, hormones and insulin thus contributing toward the acne problem.
Fatty Foods:
Following types of fat highly contribute to acne:
Saturated fats
Trans fats
These fats are mostly present in the processed baked foods and fried foods. Eating such foods accelerates the release of cytokines in the blood that cause inflammation in the skin and make it red and sored.
