GASTROESOPHAGEOUS REFLUX
by Dr. Maria Papavasileiou, nutritionist
Gastroesophageal reflux is a fairly common disorder, characterized by the ascent of gastric juices inside the esophagus. In a healthy person, ingested food passes through the esophagus and into the stomach (an acidic environment where digestion takes place). During swallowing, the esophagus, through a series of rhythmic movements, pushes the ingested food downwards.

In patients with gastroesophageal reflux, this movement works practically in reverse : the gastric juices go up from the stomach to the esophagus and consequently the acid content irritates the mucosa with the following symptoms: stomach acid, burning of the sternum, chest pain, ache. throat, cough. Let’s see the symptoms.
