Will the oxytocin spray make us lose weight?
An oxytocin spray could be the new great ploy to lose weight without changing your diet or habits: according to a research by Massachusetts General Hospital, which conducted a study with the support of the Boston Nutrition and Obesity Research Center, it would be enough to inhale a spray containing oxytocin to overweight people to make them go hungry. Oxytocin, a hormone that originates in the hypothalamus, is the key hormone of sexual intimacy, which women produce more than men because it is a hormone that comes into play in motherhood, increasing during pregnancy, at the time of delivery and with breastfeeding. More generally, it is a hormone closely linked to both female and male sexuality. We release oxytocin when we are aroused, and particularly when we orgasm or are stimulated. For this reason, oxytocin is defined ” the love hormone “: and if it is true that when we are “taken for someone” we forget to eat and that love makes you lose your appetite (not me, er …), then it may be clearer to us why the scholars resorted to oxytocin to make the sample of overweight men involved in the study go hungry. And apparently the oxytocin spray works:just inhale it an hour before main meals to save around 122 calories per meal, which means over 360 calories over the course of the day, but even more if we think it removes the urge to snack. Basically, you naturally cut 500 calories from meals without any effort, and lose weight without a diet. The curious thing is that the oxytocin spray already exists: it is produced by Novartis and is sold in pharmacies, but not to stop the appetite, but to help breastfeeding women. It is the first time that a study has dealt with the effects of an existing product for reasons other than those for which it is sold.
However, the experts themselves urge caution: Since inhalations would be higher than those for breastfeeding women, it is still unclear what the long-term effects of a daily consumption of oxytocin spray are. So don’t get any strange ideas.
