Why can’t I lose weight despite eating little? (second part)
In this article, I address the second part of the reasons why we can’t lose weight . The first, which you can read in the link , dealt with the issue of calories and quantities of food , while in this part we will talk about metabolism.
So … Why can’t I lose weight despite eating little?
The second most important reason you can’t lose weight even if you don’t eat too much has to do with your metabolism, and in particular your ability to burn calories in the right way, so we’re going to talk about total metabolism . Well, one of the mistakes you make when you want to lose weight is overestimating your total metabolism.
Total metabolism is the sum of our basal metabolism with all the daily activities that make us burn calories , but also with the effect of some types of thermogenesis, for example that deriving from the foods we consume.
Differences between total and basal metabolism.
We can define the basal metabolic rate as the amount of energy that the body burns to remain purely alive: it is the biggest voice of our daily energy expenditure, and this is precisely the problem.
When we have to go on a diet, on the one hand we must never have a diet that is lower in calories than our basal metabolic rate ; on the other hand, we have to create the right caloric deficit , so we have a fairly accurate idea of how much energy we burn in our daily activities ( total metabolism ). To make you understand this concept, I’ll give you an example:
with the same diet, a sedentary woman will not lose weight in the same way as a very active woman, because even if these two women had a similar basal metabolism, it is the total metabolism that changes. It is therefore very important to know how many calories we burn during the day.
The big problem why you are unable to lose weight is that you underestimate this aspect, or maybe you are convinced that you burn more calories than you currently burn. This error is MUCH more common than you think, for the reasons I will list ( CONTINUED ON PAGE TWO )
