New WhatsApp update of September 2106, mentions arrive. If you’ve seen your name in blue with a snail next to it, don’t worry! It is not a virus. This is the new mentions system on WhatsApp introduced in groups. In practice, when you write the at sign followed by the name of the contact, this receives a notification.

The idea is to make our life easier :), at least in two cases:

1. How many groups are there that you don’t follow and whose messages you don’t read? It can happen, however, that at some point someone asks you a question or talks about you. In this case, that person can insert a mention to notify you and you will know what you are talking about.
2. Reverse situation: how many times do you wait for a response from a member of a WhatsApp group but he never reads the group’s messages? Well, in this case insert a mention by writing an @ before the name and the recipient will receive a notification on WhatsApp and read the chat.

If a person has the group silent, do they get notifications of my mentions?

Yes, even if the group is disabled, the user will be notified that someone mentioned them in the conversation. The only way not to receive mentions is to turn them off.

How to disable mentions?

Just go to: Settings> Notifications> Groups> Disable this option.

NB Beware, if you deactivate this option, it will be deactivated for all the groups you belong to. It cannot be deactivated for one group only.

How can I get mentions in WhatsApp?
