The Weimaraner is a hound, therefore a hunting and pointing dog, elegant and balanced. Thanks to its gentle character and its ease of learning and versatility it can also be trained for agility activities, pet therapy , obedience, civil service, water rescue, but also as a simple family pet dog.

The origins of the Weimaraner

The name of the breed itself indicates its origin, Weimar . It was introduced to the Weimar court in the 19th century although traces of this type of dog have also been counted in France in much earlier times, in the 13th century, similar to the gray Saint Louis dog .

Breed selection stalled due to the wars of the last century, and was resumed in the 1950s and
exports increased. In the United States, the Weimaraner is a highly regarded dog in obedience tests .

The morphology of the Weimaraner

This dog with an elegant appearance and gait is a large dog that can weigh 35/40 kg for a height at the withers between 65 and 70 cm .

The structure is well proportioned, harmonious and muscular, the limbs slender and parallel, the webbed legs. The Weimaraner can be either short- haired , hard and thick, or long-haired , smooth or wavy. The color of the coat can be silver or dark gray and this characteristic has earned it the nickname of ” gray ghost “, often the head and ears have a lighter color.

In America they also selected the blue version , a very special coat. The skull is particular with a median furrow on the forehead, a sharp muzzle, the ears are long and drooping, the eyes of an amber color.

The psychology of the Weimaraner

The Weimaraner is a very balanced dog, easy to train, because it is very intelligent, docile and obedient . He loves to hunt, tireless and constant in research and retrieval. It binds itself in an almost indissoluble way to its owner, loves to live at home, in close contact with his family and by virtue of this he renounces open spaces.

It is a very sensitive dog and establishes a psychological dependence with its owner: it needs to be treated with gentleness, patience and respect. If left alone for long periods or neglected, it manifests destructive disturbances.

The care of the Weimaraner

The Weimaraner is a long- lived dog with a life expectancy of 10/13 years. He needs constant physical activity to release his great energy. The diet must be balanced and seasonally differentiated. The hair is easy to manage, cleans and polishes easily.

Unfortunately, this breed can suffer from gastric torsion ; it is important not to subject the dog to physical activity immediately after eating and possibly divide the meal into several moments throughout the day.

Like many large breeds, it can be prone to hip dysplasia , a congenital disorder involving the coxo-femoral joint.
