Turbinate laser surgery for better breathing
One of the fundamental problems of those suffering from turbinate hypertrophy is that, very often, they do not have the faintest idea of what kind of ailment afflicts them, at least before the diagnosis. The symptoms are varied: difficulty in breathing, snoring, frequent runny nose, engulfed by an excessive volume of mucus, continuous “sinusitis”, recurrent migraines, tendency to breathe through the mouth.
Therefore, it may happen that, trying to somehow remedy breathing difficulties of which he does not know the cause, he  resorts to sprays – one of the most classic forms of self-medication – or decongestant nasal drops, and ends up causing a medicamentous rhinitis .
In milder cases of turbinate hypertrophy , the doctor may recommend some effective therapies with antihistamines and cortisone, but in the most serious cases the surgeon will have to be called. Traditional surgical therapy, under general anesthesia, requires hospitalization for a few days and can cause some discomfort to patients, especially due to the frequent need for rear-end collisions to avoid annoying bleeding. Hence the recourse , absolutely advisable, to the new techniques of minimally invasive surgery , with which it is possible to avoid bleeding, and consequently the use of tampons, and the hospitalization time is drastically reduced: after a few hours from the operation , the patient can go home. Not entirely secondary, with mini-invasive techniques, general anesthesia is not necessary : it will be done under local anesthesia without any problem.
Among these techniques, the most widespread is probably the laser surgery of the turbinates, which involves devascularization with the use of the laser and very rapid healing. It is performed under local anesthesia, without injections inside the nasal cavities, and is completely painless. The patient is usually given an intravenous relaxant drug. The mucous membranes remain intact, despite the emptying of the turbinates, whose functions are fully preserved. The only disadvantage, probably, are the costs: they range from 2500 to 3500 euros. In any case, money well spent for those who want to avoid complications and problems.
