The professor. Veronesi on the vegan diet: no to improvisation

Professor Umberto Veronesi, oncologist, on the vegan diet , seemed quite cautious (more than usual) in an interview released in these days on l’Epresso : a diet that can be protective against certain diseases, but without significant advantages compared to to an omnivorous and vegetarian Mediterranean diet. His point of view is quite clear: the vegetarian diet (therefore not vegan, but with the inclusion of eggs and dairy products) is “globally the healthiest diet”, just as it is important that the basis of our diet , also omnivorous, both vegetable.

On the vegan diet , Professor Veronesi emphasizes the importance of being followed by a nutritionist, and avoiding do-it-yourself. He explains that even though there are many products on the market today enhanced with vitamins and mineral salts that are perfect for those who completely renounce animal proteins, the risk of developing nutritional deficiencies is large and should not be underestimated, not only as regards vitamin B12. The vegan diet is an extreme choice, so even if we feel able, through the internet, to find the right information, it would be better to rely on a nutritionist, Veronesi advises.

In fact, he explains that: “To follow a vegan diet and feel good it is important to know the nutritional needs of man. And then how can they be satisfied with the plant world, relying on specialists to set up a correct eating style even in this most extreme choice “.
