The case of Whitney Way Thore and fat shaming
I return to the case of fat shaming , or the tendency to discriminate against overweight people, which has expanded to become a worldwide phenomenon thanks to social networks: the brave keyboards who waste their time insulting chubby people are much more numerous than we can imagine, and obviously their behaviors affect those of the group, in the sense that they are easily imitated. In the sights of fat shamers there are often celebrities, who are ridiculed regardless of their weight:for this reason it may happen that photomodels are also targeted which, despite being in size 40, seem more curvilinear than others; actresses who have gained a few pounds or appear more relaxed in a photo; ordinary people, who maybe join facebook; teenagers.
That is why, every initiative that denounces fat shaming must be an example: because the people who discriminate against us because of our weight are themselves victims of simplistic reasoning that we must know how to fight on equal terms. For example, the idea that a person with overweight problems owes his extra pounds to laziness and the wrong diet .
Today I give you the example of Whitney Way Thore : television personality known to the American public for the program My big fat fabulous life, Whitney is a special activist; she is committed to ensuring that people, and women in particular, are no longer discriminated against for their physical appearance, and therefore judged on the basis of appearance. To do this she even devised a campaign, No Body Shame, to encourage people to experience their bodies with a greater sense of acceptance.
Her case is emblematic: Whitney in fact allegedly gained over 50 kilos due to polycystic ovary syndrome, which would gradually make her gain weight, creating other hormonal imbalances that according to the doctors made it very difficult for her to lose weight. Yet this did not stop the girl from being positive and proposing herself in a positive way: already last year with a video that went viral, ” A fat girl dancing “, Whitney showed that despite having a healthy diet and exercising all day(she has a very active lifestyle and is a very good dancer), her weight has not changed, but she is the one who has changed and has stopped giving it too much importance. Often a guest on the Doctor Oz Show, Thore is an example of how we must have a healthy and active lifestyle regardless of our weight, and that our weight is only one aspect of our body, but it is not the universe.
