The Atkins Diet for Fast Weight Loss
The Atkins diet is making a comeback, having been one of the most popular and widespread early ketogenic diets, hence low-carb. What does it mean? It means that Atkins is a diet that harnesses the power of fat and a sufficient amount of protein (not too much, however), to keep insulin at bay and promote fast weight loss and rapid weight loss. I did the Atkins a long time ago, even reading the book: Basically, you don’t really need to count calories if you follow Atkins well.Indeed, the best way to do it is to abound in good fats (extra virgin olive oil, preferably raw butter, coconut oil, avocado, good quality fatty and aged cheeses, walnuts, avocados, almonds, flax or chia seeds ) and eat until you are satisfied while keeping the amount of sugar under control, which should not exceed 20 grams per day (excluding fiber).
Basically, the Atkins is a normal-protein diet in phases (one of induction, let’s say the shock phase; one of continuation of weight loss and one of maintenance) and a list of prohibited foods, admitted with reserve and allowed that makes it look like the Dukan. But while the Dukan is a starvation diet, the Atkins is more versatile, tasty and satisfying thanks to the fat, it also works better on the metabolism.
If you see the list of allowed foods in Atkins and you have a modicum of logic about healthy eating, you will surely turn up your nose and think that the list is wrong. But no: you can REALLY eat bacon and eggs for breakfast. Sausages are allowed (in moderation due to the salt), fatty cheeses, mayonnaise, cooking cream, pickles, but basically it is a diet that must be based on good fats, eggs, hearty fish and shellfish, blue, fatty and aged cheeses, the most nutritious cuts of meat, or those NOT lean. You will ask me: and how do you lose weight?
You eat fat and protein for weeks, and the body, which asks for sugar to function, has to fix the fat (ketosis) in order to have energy, so the ingested fats are eliminated, the blood glucose level drops accordingly and you lose weight. Done for a month, Atkins creates no contraindications, if you follow it wisely: breakfast with eggs, a small portion of whole Greek yogurt, butter, prepared with almond flour, coconut or walnuts, chia seed puddings or a half cup of mascarpone with a handful of red fruits. Snacks with a piece of Grana Padano, olives, two slices of bresaola, a handful of walnuts, raw fennel and cucumbers in pinzimonio with good raw oil. Lunch with quality meat, shellfish or fish in small quantities (tofu is fine too), green leafy vegetables dressed with raw oil, butter, herbs and oil seeds. Ditto for dinner. A piece of apple at the end of a meal. Here you will find the list of allowed foods.Â
I give you an example of the diet on page two. Provided you drink enough, the weight lost on Atkins is substantial. Consider three to two kilos per week as minimum weight loss
