Tabby Cat, characteristics

The Soriano cat is the common cat so widespread in Europe and on our national territory. It is often mistakenly associated with the European cat : instead, they are two different breeds.

That of the Soriano is not a real breed, according to the more restricted and elitist meaning of the term: it is the so-called house cat, which has all the original characteristics, since it has not undergone manipulations to refine peculiarities and above all it is a breed mestizo.

The Soriano is also called Tabby, from the Latin “attabi” to indicate the Iranian region Attabiyah where a silk with tiger motifs similar to the variegated coat of the Soriano was produced.

Origins of the Tabby Cat

The Soriano cat has millenary origins and can boast truly extraordinary anecdotes. It is the cat of the ancient Egyptians , the sacred animal that more than 4000 years ago was idolized and represented in many cave paintings and of the peoples that overlooked the Mediterranean. The name itself, Soriano , derives from the word “Sorìa”, the Syria of our day .

He arrived in Europe aboard the ships of the great navigational peoples such as those of the Phoenicians. It is a cat that has withstood famine and dark times, thanks to their great adaptability and their instinct as mouse hunters.

Morphology of the Tabby Cat

The Soriano cat is a beautiful medium-sized cat , with short hair and its coat can take on various colors: black, white, reddish, striped, in two or three shades.

The head is larger than the rest of the body , round in shape, with well-spaced and upright ears and round eyes, whose color matches the coat color well: green eyes if the cat is gray, brown in the case of reddish hair.

The male can reach 7 kg of weight , the female 4 kg. It has strong and muscular legs, with black fingertips. The tail is thick at the base and bushy with a rounded end.

Psychology of the Tabby Cat

The Soriano is an independent cat with a strong and determined character. He has always loved freedom and is unsuitable for home confinement. But he is also very affectionate with those who choose to be.

However, it remains a wild specimen , which follows its instinct and can decide to flee or move away from the house for prolonged periods, to follow its hunter’s inclinations or if not sterilized to look for its mate during the heat period.

It is a fiery cat and often to conquer its cat if in the presence of rivals it entertains violent fights .

In fact, we must remember that his DNA has brought him to the present day since the dawn of timeand has accumulated experience, cunning and the ability to exploit situations and adapt to changes.

Tabby Cat Care

The tabby cat does not require particularly fine nutrition , but it likes to eat often, more snacks than full meals, which can help quench the hunter’s instincts.

It is a cat that also takes care of its coat : it washes itself and having a short coat does not require regular grooming. It enjoys excellent health and is generally a long-lived cat.
