SPOTIFY CHALLENGES CLUBHOUSE WITH THE ACQUISITION OF BETTY LABS

In the past few hours Spotify announced its acquisition towards Betty Labs, starting a real competition with the Clubhouse app.

It’s been known lately how much Spotify has invested heavily in pre-recorded podcast content, and now the company is looking to host live audio conversations with the acquisition of Betty Labs, kicking off several platforms like Clubhouse . The platform announced just today that it has bought the company behind the Locker Room live sports audio app – the amount of money the company had to invest in the acquisition has not been disclosed.

The Locker Room application will remain active in the App Store , however in the future it will be renamed with a different name on iOS and finally also on Android with a broader focus on music, culture and sports content. Spotify claims to see live audio as ideal for creators looking to connect with audiences in real time.

Whether it’s previewing an album, hosting a question and answer session or maybe even performing , it seems to be a very promising project. Just after the announcement of the acquisition of Betty Labs, Spotify’s  Gustav Söderström told The Verge that the company will allow anyone to host conversations and not just approved creators, meaning its app will compete with more than just Clubhouse. , but with all the various live audio apps currently on the market, including Twitter Spaces  and Discord (another brand that Microsoft wants to get its hands on ).

Although the man has said that the two apps will remain separate, he has given the public hope that one day we will be able to see them more united. Furthermore, he speculated on the fact that in the future various features may be added, for example the one dedicated to monetization by putting reserved chats only for a fee; however nothing has been confirmed and at the moment it is just hopes.

Audio content has become very popular in the tech space as the biggest names on the web seek to invest in pre-recorded podcast content and live audio. People record their Spaces and Clubhouse chats and upload them as MP3 files to Anchor, Spotify’s podcast hosting and creation software – the company might want to make it a lot easier and who knows, maybe they’ll let you record in their chats natively and then share them with a button.
