Slow metabolism? It depends on the hormones
In the past few days I got to see the lecture that Dr. Schwarzbein , a famous American endocrinologist with over 25 years of experience in the field, gave on metabolism and hormone health, for the presentation of her latest book “Survival of the smartest” ( here and here , in English). A very informative experience on the damage that diets cause to the metabolism , and above all on the reason why metabolic damage occurs due to our food choices. Why do we find ourselves with a slow metabolism? Dr. Schwarzbein has no doubts:the responsibility lies with our hormones, since the human body is a “biochemical system” which must always strive for balance to function well . Losing weight or gaining weight, he explains, is not just a matter of how many calories we ingest and how many we consume, but it is due to how hormones behave, and to our metabolism
Metabolism and hormones are closely linked, as are metabolism and the immune system . When a person is fat, he thinks he has to lose weight to stay healthy, but that’s not the case. The first thing to do is not to cut calories, but to restore a balanced hormone profile. A slow metabolism is the indicator of a hormonal imbalance, which the body tries to compensate as it can, until you get sick. Slow metabolism, caused by imbalance, accelerates the cellular aging process, causing us to lose our ability to rebuild and compensate, and creating an imbalance. From this point of view, we must never look at the symptom as an isolated fact, and treat it in isolation : we must strive to look at the general picture, the hormonal one., and to think that the body is sending us signals, or symptoms. The accumulation of weight or the tendency to gain weight is often associated with digestive disorders, apathy, weakness, difficulty sleeping.
