Siamese cat, characteristics

The Siamese cat is an easily recognizable specimen even by non-experts.

Its shaded coat, the paws that seem to be covered by a glove , the expressive clear eyes are its distinctive features and make it one of the most appreciated cats by admirers of the feline world.

It is an expensive cat, both as a purchase price, around € 800 or € 1000 and as veterinary expenses.

Origins of the Siamese Cat

The name of the Siamese derives from its country of origin, Siam , the current Thailand . He was a cat dear to noble families and considered the keeper of precious pottery.

He arrived in Europe in the late 1800s thanks to the king of Siam who donated a couple of cats to the English consul. It is considered a very valuable breed and has undergone a rather elaborate selection process , so much so that some original characteristics have been changed.

Morphology of the Siamese Cat

The Siamese cat is medium in size, the male specimens can reach 5/6 kg, the females up to 4 kg. It is a sinuous, elegant cat with a slender physique.

The legs are long and slender, the hair is short, silky and dense, with a cream-colored coat with darker areas, such as the legs, tail, ears and shaded muzzle.

The color variation of these areas, defined ” points “ , depends on the environmental temperature in which the Siamese cat lives: in warmer climates the points are lighter, at colder temperatures they are dark.

In the standard nomenclature of the breed, 4 points relating to coloring have been identified :

  1. Seal Point, the generic one with dark points in contrast with the light coat;
  2. Chocolate Point, cocoa color with an ivory coat;
  3. Blue Point, gray / blue on an ice-colored mantle;
  4. Lilac Point with points tending to pink.

The eyes are particularly blue, with an oriental cut , which give expressiveness to the look, framed by a triangular head and divided by a long and harmonious nose.

Psychology of the Siamese Cat

The Siamese cat is a very lively cat, who loves to play and do all kinds of activities, it is called the “dog of cats”. You can hardly surprise him curled up and sly, indeed he loves playing with children and being in the company of humans.

Characterially it is a very selective pet and manifests possessive behaviors towards the one he has chosen as his human darling, from whom he seeks attention and cuddles.

It meows a lot to communicate, it also modulates its timbre in alleged conversations with its owner. If left at home alone, it is better to equip it with toys, balls, scratching posts with which to spend time and not get bored, for the benefit of furniture and curtains, because it does not like solitude.

Care of the Siamese Cat

The Siamese is a cat that needs some extra attention : the diet must be rich in proteins and low in carbohydrates, as it is very greedy and if the diet is not balanced this breed of cats risks overweight .

Like all very selected breeds, it is necessary to pay attention to the health of the Siamese cat, which requires frequent veterinary visits, particular care of the ears , prone to otitis.
