Seven reasons NOT to diet

Seven reasons NOT to diet

body of truthI take a cue from this very interesting article that appeared on a news blog to talk about diets and obsessions for weight loss: the author, Harriet Brown, science journalist, wrote a very interesting book entitled ” Body of Truth “, in which she explains how diets and eating disorders are closely linked and how the whole diet business is ruining our health permanently. In the article, Harriet lists some reasons why it is much better to accept yourself as you are and lead a healthy lifestyle than claiming to lose weight by dieting.. Now you will ask and you will ask me: why should you care? I know with how much motivation and how strongly we can be absolutely convinced that to stay healthy we must lose weight, but likewise most of the people I know (including myself if I think about all the wrong things I’ve done in the past to be lean) more than weight lost health and gained an obsession. This is why perhaps instead of thinking about the final result we need to ask ourselves a little about the reasons why we want to lose weight at all costs.
HARRIET BROWN’S 7 REASONS NOT TO TAKE A SLIMMING DIET
1) Overweight or slightly obese people have a longer life expectancy, while many diseases are linked to a state of obesity:
diets may make you lose weight, but they may not make you gain or improve your health

2) As many as 95 percent of people who go on a diet and lose weight regain it over the next five years – this is something the studies don’t say simply because they don’t observe patients after the first 18 months.
3) Losing and regaining weight (the yo-yo effect) is much more bad for your health than staying your own size
4) The obsession with diet and weight was born in the thirties / forties, when the first insurance companies point of the guidelines in which they associated height with weight as an index of good health:
do we really have to stick to the estimates born for a profit?
5) Many diets and many treatments against obesity are questionable and not at all healthy: you risk getting sick by going on a diet, so much so that you regret the blissful innocence with which you once ate everything and didn’t worry too much about it.
6) Despite its danger, over half of the people who undergo bariatric surgery regain the weight they lost initially.
7) Since our metabolism is an “adaptive” system, doctors cannot be sure that eating less and doing more activities can give long-term results, but only in the short term: our body tends to gradually get used to and adapt to the new diet and the new regime, so if we want to be at a healthy weight we must gradually increase the restrictions and increase fatigue. The more we diet, the more stress increases and the metabolism slows down.
One more reason? The waste of time and money. Maintaining a healthy weight costs, staying healthy does not. To stay healthy we must eat well, aim for quality, move a little every day to stay active. In order to stay at our desired weight or try to get there, we become obsessed with food, diets, activities to do and calories. Basically a job.
