Salt consumption, metabolism and weight loss
An interesting study sheds new light on the consumption of salt in our diet.
As we know, salt is a bit of a controversial topic.
Normally it is advisable not to overdo it with salt, and indeed, to eat practically without salt to avoid fluid retention, fight cell aging, avoid the risks of cardiovascular health and other diseases.
All agree? Not so fast.
After discovering that eating eggs doesn’t necessarily cause hypercholesterolemia, the role of salt in our diet may be the other major afterthought in mainstream medicine.
In recent years there had already been various clarifications in which we returned to think of salt as a fundamental element for the health of our metabolism.
In fact, salt promotes more efficient digestion and raises the immune system.
Some studies on the consumption of salt that have not been discussed in Italy.
- In 2013 a special commission promoted by the Institute of Medicine at the behest of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established that there is no need to go below 2,300 milligrams of salt per capita daily, therefore 2.3 grams . The equivalent of half a teaspoon.
- Populations with salt intakes of less than one gram daily have a greater risk of premature death.
Conversely, populations often taken as an example for minimal blood pressure referring to low salt consumption may have had other causes that contributed to low blood pressure, according to the researchers. Causes that do not concern salt at all. - Listed here are many other studies in which minimal salt consumption is not associated with the health benefits we all assume.Â
And now we come to the new study, where a group of researchers noted that increased salt consumption associated with a high-fat diet defended a group of mice from weight gain.
While lower consumption, with the same calories and fat, they made them fat.
According to the researchers, salt promotes fat digestion and overall better digestion.
This does not mean pushing for a greater consumption of salt, but to consider an extremely low-sodium diet with more caution.
In short, if you are one of those who have decided to abolish salt because the food is already salty, perhaps you will consider an extra pinch of salt in your diet.
