Psychological humanistic astrology: the Moon
This article illustrates the meaning of the Moon in psychological humanistic astrology and its connections with the I Ching, the Book of changes.
“ What are you doing, moon, in heaven? Tell me, what are you doing, Silent moon ? “.
This star has always been considered for man as the most fascinating and mysterious symbolized even by different goddesses in the mythological archetypes according to the growth cycles of the woman. Aphrodite, Demeter and Hecate indicate the extreme mutability of the Moon perceived by the human being as opposed to the Sun, considered a male principle, which is not subject to phases.
Therefore, associated with the feminine principle, the Moon in psychological astrology contains all the characteristics of the hexagram 2 KKUNN – The Receptive of the I Ching formed by the repetition for six times of the broken line that represents the primeval strength of the Yin defined as dark, yielding, receptive.
To fully define the meaning and in a certain sense the “mission” indicated by the position of the Moon in the natal chart from the perspective of evolutionary astrology, it is essential to observe the relationship with the Sun of birth given by aspects and characteristics of the zodiacal signs concerned.
In fact, the fundamental attribute of the Moon understood as Receptive is dedication , an attribute that places it in the condition of being guided and in a certain sense activated by the Yang the Creative principle.
It is therefore not a question of dualism or opposition but rather the awareness of the complementarity of these forces not only as regards the knowledge of how the man – woman relationship will be for the subject but also for the presence in every human being of the coexistence of the spiritual world with that of the senses.
The I Ching is very clear: “It is the Creative that generates all things, but these are brought into being by the Receptive.
” So here is the Moon in its meaning as a mother who receives the semen and not only referring to real motherhood but rather to creativity as the ability to create from a stimulus received, whether by writing, painting or in any artistic form or not for make an idea concrete.
The role of the Moon is to complete a work by making real an input, a task assigned by the will of the Ego expressed by the Sun. In the words of the I Ching “if the noble undertakes something and if he tries to guide he gets lost ”
We can find a reference to the Moon understood as Hecate , terrifying goddess, black mother devouring and destroying guardian of Hades.
