Protein in the diet – does it lower your blood pressure or kill you?
New research adds fire to the straw of the controversy over high-protein diets : according to a study published in the American Journal of Hypertension , in fact, if you ate over one hundred grams of protein a day , both animal and vegetable, (the equivalent of five cans and half of natural tuna) would reduce the risk of high blood pressure by 40 percent. About the proteins? That’s the point: no.
The lowering of blood pressure would in fact be a consequence of the degree of satisfaction and satiety that proteins give uscompared to carbohydrates and fats: if we eat a lot of proteins we must necessarily eat less fat and fewer carbohydrates, all to the advantage of cholesterol, blood sugar and lower blood pressure. Already this “indirect merit” of proteins would be enough to greatly reduce the research . But there is more: according to the researchers, it is the amino acids that have a slight vasodilation effect, which therefore helps blood pressure. Interesting. Too bad that amino acids, essential and otherwise, are not found only in proteins, but also and above all in fruits, vegetables, nuts, cereals and wholemeal and legumes. Some amino acids are not found in proteins at all. And on the other hand, a massive consumption of proteins, especially from animal sources, promotes aging, and increases the risk of hypercholesterolemia and cardiovascular accidents. It is no coincidence that the study suggests preferring proteins with a high fiber content (vegetables? Legumes?) And coming from dairy products and cheeses.
But how? Hadn’t it been said that too many dairy products and cheeses were bad for you?
I then checked the source, but it says nothing about these phantom 100 grams of protein per day and about the preferable sources, but it is also true that I was only able to consult the abstract . Of course, the skepticism remains, and I hope to be able to update you soon.
