Pandemic body: how Covid has changed us
What have been the effects of the Covid pandemic on our appearance? Even those who did not get sick or worse, in fact, suffered psycho-physical stress damage from the pandemic of these two years, which inevitably affected his appearance.
Many people have gained weight, for example, but not only that. so much so that we can speak of a pandemic body, or a body that has changed due to the upheavals in our lives caused by Covid.
Journalist and writer Amy Fleming has listed all the side effects of the pandemic on our health and image for the Guardian.
PANDEMIC BODY: HOW COVID HAS CHANGED OUR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
-
Hair loss or hair thinning.
According to a survey by a British Trichological Institute, almost 80% of people complain of having lost more hair in these two years. This is for those who have fallen ill with Covid, and for those who have lived through the various lockdowns with more stress.
Especially women are those who complain of Telogen Effluvium, that is, changes in the hair growth cycle that lead to more intense loss and greater thinning on the scalp. The good news is that the condition is reversible. -
Eye problems.
Puffy eyes, dark circles and more: dry eyes and more cases of myopia emerged as another unpleasant effect of lockdowns. The reason is simple: we spent several hours in front of TV and PC.
-
Caries and other dental problems.
Not just cavities. For two years, many of us have been missing our dentist appointments. The result is that, in addition to the growing number of cavities, many have begun to suffer from bruxism (grinding of the teeth, especially at night) and jaw pain.
-
Cardiovascular events
Another problem has been the cancellation of routine check-ups with the doctor of many people who have heart problems and high blood pressure. As a result, more people have died from heart attacks and heart attacks.
-
Digestive disorders
In these two years there has been an increase in cases of irritable bowel, but the diagnoses of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, and disorders such as gastritis have also increased. Many people have suffered from intestinal regularity problems, probably due to stress and binge eating.
-
Liver
Millions of people have coped with pandemic stress by drinking more alcohol. The result was an enlarged liver leading to cirrhosis of the liver: more hospital admissions occurred due to people in the throes of tremors, profuse sweat and states of anxiety and hyper arousal.
-
Leather
In recent years, people have suffered from major skin disorders: generally the conditions of skin and hair go hand in hand, so it is not surprising an increase in cases of rosacea, eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis on the hands, caused by frequent washing (a doctor today washes his hands over a hundred times a day, regardless of visits) and the use of sanitizing gels, which contain irritating substances such as alcohol, glycerin, amuchina, which tend to dry and peel the epidermis. But there have also been numerous cases of people with peeling on the face, dermatitis, spots on the cheeks, due to the use of the mask.
-
Feet
Working from home meant that many spent too much time in slippers or barefoot, or wearing only socks. The result is that joint problems, tendonitis, fasciitis, heel problems and ankle pain have increased.
-
Body weight
On average, there was an increase in body weight of about two kilos more. Considering that many lost weight during the pandemic, this means that others gained much more weight.
