Orthorexia and sport, the case of Maddy Moon

I have already told you about Maddy Moon : former bodybuilder and former fanatic of healthy eating, at the age of 25 Maddy Moon became famous in America for having witnessed and criticized the dangers of certain obsessive diets and the obsessiveness of sport, two extreme behaviors which, alongside her lean and enviable “competition” body, have also caused her various health problems, to the point of reducing her to the end of her life. Similar cases have been reported by many other women, such as Allison Bryant, a former athlete. Maddy until recently suffered from orthorexia, an eating disorder, to which was added an obsession with body image, which prompted her to practice bodybuilding to participate in competitions, and to deal with personal trainers / torturers who forbade her of any kind of sugar, thus increasing her fear of being out of shape even when she was only allowed one fruit.

Maddy, who is now a beautiful girl capable of eating whatever she wants without any worry of gaining weight, has denounced the health effects that so-called healthy diets entail, and proposes herself as a coach for all those who associate food with a sense of guilt and frustration, fearing that they will gain weight or harm their health. But she doesn’t stop there. Recently, Maddy herself wrote an article on the pages of the Daily Mail in which she accuses the bodybuilding industry of worsening the dietary problems of those obsessed with physical fitness , and in particular of being dangerous, increasing in those who frequent the gyms the dysmorphophobia, that is the disturbance of the image, typical of women who see fat when they are thin and of people who when they are muscled are not very fit, not toned, too “thin”. In short, from sport as an opportunity for well-being, bodybuilding would become a trap for those who already tend to obsess about food, diets, a healthy life. “Bodybuilding was one of the factors that contributed the most to my ortoress,” explained Maddy. (continued on page two)
