Metabolic flexibility: how to improve metabolism

What is metabolic flexibility?

This term, first coined by scientists Kelley and Mandarin, translates into our body’s ability to burn more sugar or fat at different times of the day.

That is to pass correctly from a good carbohydrate metabolism (which allows us to burn sugars) to a good lipid metabolism (which allows us to use reserve fats to obtain energy) according to the energy needs of the body.

In general it has been seen for example that people who tend to gain weight have poor metabolic flexibility (ie they are metabolically “efficient”, savers), and that poor metabolic flexibility is associated with insulin resistance.

Basically, having good metabolic flexibility means being able to eat without gaining weight.
And without that the energies we give to our body to live, in one way or another, result in an accumulation of weight.

At present, strategies to improve metabolic flexibility are still under study. So on the net you can find the most disparate advice, not always the right one and with a good scientific basis behind it, to succeed.

In this article we will look at the tips that all experts agree on, and how to apply them in our daily life.
