Low fat diet or low carb diet: which one works?
Fat-free diet or sugar-free diet? This is what everyone is asking, taking into account that these are the two real food trends that spur us to follow: on the one hand, the fat-free, low-calorie and low-fat diets, where we recommend foods without cholesterol, few animal proteins, large consumption of whole carbohydrates and vegetable proteins, but above all reduced fat consumption. On the other, diets that eliminate carbohydrates and focus on fats and proteins, such as banting and paleo. They are two opposing and irreconcilable factions, but this experiment will make us understand which of the two works the most. Basically none.
Two American doctors, in fact, homozygous twins , tried two different diets for a month , the only common limitation they had, for one the elimination of sugars (therefore also carbohydrates) from the diet, and for the other the elimination of fats. . The aim was to understand if it is the fats or the sugars that make us gain more weight at the table.
The results, without any other criterion than that of eating everything but one fat, the other sugar, were disappointing .: in one month the twin who ate everything except sugars and carbohydrates lost about three and a half kilos (two of which of muscle mass), the other who deprived himself of fat, a kilo. In short, even if the results of the sugar-free diet are three times those of the fat-free diet, the twin who did not eat sugar (and therefore also carbohydrates) for a month suffered from fatigue, mental confusion, bad breath . The other, on the other hand, was constantly hungry, which prompted him to eat much more than normal.
Both came to the conclusion that the diet should not only limit fats or sugars , but in order to lose weight well and with the head, foods and portions must be reviewed. Balanced nutrition wins!
