Low carb diet, is it good for the heart and the figure?
A study, indeed, a meta-analysis, funded by the Atkins company (that of the famous Atkins diet, high in fat and low in carbohydrates) was published, in which it is stated that the low-carb diet would not only lead to weight loss. more than a low-fat carbohydrate diet, but by causing greater weight loss, it would reduce cardiovascular risks in patients who follow it. Unfortunately, the risk of using the results of this meta-analysis to talk about the success of protein diets in reducing body weight is very high, which is why I read the study thoroughly before telling you about it.
The experts selected 17 studies on the effectiveness of low carb or low fat diets, coming to establish which diet was the most effective based on the data collected. According to the meta-analysis, the 17 studies were collected on the basis of some selection criteria: all people had to have followed the diet for at least two months and a maximum of one year; a low-carb diet means a diet with 120 grams or less of carbohydrates per day; a low-fat diet means a diet with 30 grams or less of fat per day.
THE STUDY’S LOW CARB DIET IS A LITTLE LOW CARB
Already from this subdivision, something is wrong: a diet with 120 grams of carbohydrates per day has more carbohydrates than a normal low-carb. To be clear, 120 grams of carbohydrates correspond to one or two fruits (for example, a single banana a day or two cups of blueberries), two slices of wholemeal bread, a few walnuts and a cup of quinoa (or other pseudocereal, the equivalent perhaps of 50 grams raw). While, those who have followed low carb diets such as the Dukan, the ketogenic diet or the Atkins diet and the like, know that they do not have this choice in carbohydrates, precisely because most low-carb diets have less than 50 grams of carbohydrates, that is, one fruit and two portions of vegetables a day.
