Longo Foundation: guide to support the immune system and feed
The Valter Longo Foundation has recently published guidelines to support the immune system and feed with awareness in the time of the Coronavirus.
The authors of the guide are Dr. Cervigni, nutritionist biologist, prof. Longo and prof. Bassetti, director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the San Martino Polyclinic in Genoa.
In this article we will look at some points of the guidelines to eat better during the epidemic and safeguard your health by acting on the immune system.
GUIDELINES FOR SUPPORTING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AND CONSCIOUSLY NOURISHING OF THE VALTER LONGO FOUNDATION
In the first part we find a hygienic prophylaxis related to food
For example, do not store raw and cooked foods together (uncovered), wash your hands thoroughly before handling any type of food and immediately afterwards, wash them after eating or drinking. Although contagion through food is highly unlikely, it would be better to consume safe food (for example packaged) and cook fresh food if we are not sure that it has not previously been handled by people without the appropriate safety criteria (gloves, masks, sanitized environments ). Even pre-cooked foods purchased should be heated to a temperature higher than 60 °. Furthermore, it would be better to avoid leaving certain foods in the sun, in order to avoid bacterial proliferation.
In the second part we find dietary indications
For example, restrictive low-calorie diets are not recommended because these diets have an impact on the immune system, as well as low-carbohydrate diets.
It is important to keep blood sugar stable throughout the day, and to eat foods that contain Vitamin C, D and Zinc. But also Copper, Iron and Selenium.
Eating 20 grams of nuts a day and 3 portions of fish a week allows us to have the right amount of polyunsaturated fats from the diet.
The power supply must be as complete and balanced as possible.
You can opt, in addition but not neglecting the care of the diet, for a multivitamin and multimineral to be taken every day in the periods of greatest risk of contagion, and an omega3 supplement to be taken every 3 days.
Finally, we must avoid gaining weight, maintaining the right body weight and being active.
