Is protein bad for the kidneys? A new study disproves this

One thing that I also studied in nutrition books when I was about to graduate was this connection between protein and kidney health. Protein is bad for the kidneys, it read.
For example, my teacher used to say that if you exceed 1.5 grams of protein per body weight, you risk kidney damage.

For some time, however, the connection between dietary proteins and renal health had been faltering , also due to studies that yes, showed a worsening of renal health in people who followed a more protein diet, but they were people with kidney disease.

In general, these are studies conducted in the 1980s, so much so that scientists expressed caution in their conclusions.

This is because in practice the evidence showed an already different story: that eating protein improved, rather than worsened, kidney activity.

Now, a new study returns to the subject . It was led by Dr. Michaela Devries-Aboud who carried out a meta-analysis of all the studies that correlated proteins to kidney problems from 1975 to 2016 , for a total of 28 studies analyzed.
The studies experimented with diets with a low or higher protein content and the participants’ kidney function was then analyzed. In all 1300, including diabetic or obese subjects.

DO PROTEINS HARM KIDNEYS?
Here are the results.

In these studies, a higher-protein diet was set around one and a half grams of protein per pound of body weight. Which typically meant around 100 grams of protein per day on average per person. People who followed this type of diet for about three weeks, however, did not show any worsening of kidney function .
There is a small “but”: beware that 1.5 grams of protein per kilo of body weight does not correspond to a “high-protein” diet but to 20% of daily calories. However, it is double the minimum protein recommended according to current WHO guidelines, which stands at 0.8 grams per kilo of body weight.
Beware, however, that we are talking about a minimum and sufficient altitude to avoid protein deficiencies, not an optimal altitude.

So if you are scared of the idea of eating a protein food per meal, as I recommend, because you are of the idea that proteins are bad, well, calm down.

Kidney-damaging proteins appear to be a hoax . However, we are not talking about an excess of protein as in high-protein diets, where you can even reach 3 grams of protein per kilo of body weight, but about an increase in protein of about 5% compared to the Mediterranean diet
