How to eat almost without salt
According to a recent US study, 1.6 million people die from too much salt, and the consequences of high blood pressure on health. The study collects 205 surveys that correlate an increase in salt in the diet to a greater increase in deaths . The incredible thing is that according to the US study it would not be the richest countries to die from a too salty diet, but the developing ones: street food but above all cheap food bought in supermarkets, such as chips, produced by poor oven and so on, they are literally killing the population precisely because of the excess of salt. A lot has been raised in the West, yet we all consume about double the dose of salt recommended by experts, or almost 4 grams per day (a small teaspoon of salt in all). Of course, eating without salt is an unnecessary and above all dangerous measure.Â
What can we do then to avoid excessive salt consumption?
Here are some tips from D. to eat almost without salt:
1) We use for vegetables, meat or fish more wine vinegar and lemon juice instead of salt, and more chopped herbs.
2) When we cook the vegetables, let’s salt them when they are cooked and no longer when they are raw.
3) We pay attention to the hidden salt: we check baked goods (including sweets), dairy products and cheeses, cold cuts from the counter, frozen products, canned products, ready-made products. It is amazing how many of these there is salt, even in sweets, even in biscuits.
4) We avoid bought sauces, cooking nuts, sausages, salty snacks such as chips.
5) When we eat out, we specify that we want dishes with little salt.
What about a high blood pressure diet? High blood pressure and salt consumption are not as interrelated as many people think. However, if you are looking for a low-sodium diet, there is the Dash diet, one of the best diets in the world: here I will explain how to do it if you suffer from hypertension.
