High-protein diet for over 60s

High-protein diet for over 60s

It is a known fact that protein requirements increase with age.
People over the age of 60 should eat more protein to preserve lean mass, reduce sarcopenia and the cellular aging process, and maintain a good metabolism.

The increase in protein for the over 60s is estimated to be around 22% more than the normal daily requirement .
But it doesn’t end there

Are you sixty and need to lose weight?
A high-protein diet associated with movement, which inevitably will be limited, is for you according to a new study. A high-protein diet can help people over 60 lose weight easily and improve overall physical performance.

Duke University Medical Center researchers analyzed the physical performance of a group of nearly seventy obese people over 60: the group was divided into two subgroups.
A control group that associated a standard low-calorie diet with increased movement and a group that associated a high-protein diet with the same mild training program.
The results were first collected after three months and then after six months.
After six months, the researchers noted that the high-protein diet group had lost more weight than the control group – about one and a half pounds more weight, but with significantly better physical performance in training

But what do we mean by high-protein diet? The recommendations are not such as to fear for health. Those over 60 could eat about 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight.
