What is dog osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a disease that involves bone and joint pain that can torment the dog, not only the elderly, but also young subjects.
In fact, there are many dogs that, at various ages, struggle to get up , jump or simply suffer from slight lameness after resting.
In dogs, osteoarthritis can be caused by an inflammatory or degenerative phenomenon of the cartilage due to particular pathogens, poor quality diet, deficiencies of antioxidants or vitamin E, malabsorption of nutrients.
Dog osteoarthritis symptoms
Osteoarthritis in dogs presents with difficulty in movement , which is always accompanied by pain even if the animal does not express it directly, it occurs only when the situation is rather advanced.
The dog, in fact, tends to hide the slight pains and continue to play and jump despite the difficulties. If he limps, sits or gets up with obvious difficulty , it is because he is already in a situation that must be dealt with seriously.

Dogs suffering from arthritic pain are often also overweight , therefore, the first thing to do is to try to make them lose weight: the food should be wholemeal or light .
Adding a teaspoon of sunflower oil or linseed oil to dog food is very useful in counteracting degeneration and inflammation.
Even B vitamins should never be lacking. For the pains that immobilize the senior dog, the devil’s claw is a great help . Generally 20 mg is enough for every 10 kg of weight, once a day, preferably combined with vitamin E.
At the first symptoms, however, to give a boost to the mood and immune system of the dog , Uncaria tomentosa is excellent , rich in oxindolic alkaloids, it has a tonic, immunostimulating and anti-inflammatory effect very useful in case of joint pain.
Its action is amplified and completed in the combination with Echinacea and the dry extract of Salix alba . Another great helper is the American Persea, known as avocado. This fruit is a real concentrate of energy : very rich in potassium, phosphorus, sulfur and magnesium, it contains vitamin E and B6 in high concentration. Avocado can be given to the dog as a fresh pulp along with food.
Natural Tips
A small trick that can greatly improve the life of a dog with joint pain is to raise the bowls of water and food .
For the dog suffering from neck or shoulder blade pain, bending the head forward to drink or eat results in pain. Therefore, make sure that the bowls are at muzzle height , so that painful unnecessary efforts should not be made.
