Jealousy in the dog
Jealousy is a common feeling in dogs . The factors that can trigger jealousy in dogs can be different, such as: the arrival of another dog, adult or puppy, the adoption of another animal, such as a cat, or the presence of a new family member , such as the arrival of a new child, a friend or a partner who is not part of the family unit.
In most cases the dog will try to send signals to the owner to make him understand his state of discomfort , as a dog under stress and anxious will react nervously, becoming sad and apathetic, up to cases in which his character can become particularly aggressive.Â
Causes of dog jealousy
Jealousy in dogs can have several triggers , such as:
- Arrival of a newborn . If the dog’s jealousy is aimed at children, you should avoid leaving the little ones alone with the dog, especially if it is a newborn. In fact, when a new member of the family arrives, the dog will notice several changes that go against him . The dog will realize that the owner will devote less time to him and, in this case, will feel excluded from any attention.
- Arrival of a new animal in the house . If you decide to adopt another dog, you will have to try to respect even the first arrival in the family, managing the approach in the best possible way and avoiding differences between the two, also because they will have to be able to coexist peacefully.Â
- Jealousy aimed at people . If the jealousy is directed towards the people who interact with the owner, it is essential that the dog interacts with all the people who will enter the house, so that he can become part of the pack. You will have to try to get him closer a little at a time , perhaps starting with walks and making him spend time with these new people. Also in this circumstance it is absolutely important to continue to give attention to the dog , avoiding making him feel aloof, the dog must continue to feel loved like the first day.Â
- Adoption of a cat . To help your dog accept the arrival of a cat, it is important to educate him better, so that he can perfectly understand the stop-stay-let signals. After that, a first meeting will have to be organized , obviously under the control of the master and for a few minutes. These continuous meetings must continue for at least 10 days, increasing space, time and freedom for the two animals: only in this way will they be able to get to know each other better. If there is availability, leave them free in different rooms but divided by transparent barriers: in this way they will begin to understand that both will be constantly present in the house. Subsequently, the barriers can be removed, even if it takes a few weeks, if not months, to achieve the right harmony. It is good to remember to always leave an escape route for the kitten in case of aggression from the dog and to divide the spaces intended for the meals of both.
