What is gingivitis
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums , which appear red, swollen, painful and have a tendency to bleed.
Gingivitis is mostly caused by a bacterial infection that develops between the gums and teeth, originating from plaque, the thin layer of mucus and bacteria that adheres to the teeth.
Dog Gingivitis Symptoms
Symptoms of gingivitis are represented by:
- weight loss due to difficulty in grasping or chewing food,
- halitosis,
- hypersalivation.
The saliva can be stringy and viscous but transparent, or pink to brownish in color and with a fetid odor with the onset of ulcerations.
The gums appear very red , swollen, ulcerated and bleeding, in the same way the mucosa is involved up to affect the pharynx and lips, in many cases there is gum disease and accumulation of tartar.Â
Dog gingivitis: natural cures and remedies
Gingivitis is a very common disease in dogs and is accompanied by dental problems with a large accumulation of tartar . Among the natural remedies that can be used in case of dog gingivitis there are:
- For halitosis, the use of an alga is effective , Ascophyllum nodosum , has remarkable purifying properties. It is taken as a food supplement.
- Hydraste : a cold infusion of a tablespoon of roots is an excellent antiseptic that also stimulates gingival reconstruction. The hydraste should be sprayed twice a day for at least ten days. If it is swallowed by the dog it does not cause any negative effects. This medicinal plant has healing properties and therefore useful in case of mouth ulcerations.
- Calendula : has excellent anti-inflammatory properties, 30 drops diluted in half a glass of water sprinkled on the gums with a syringe without a needle. Even if it is swallowed by the dog it has no negative effect.
- Propolis : very effective if gingivitis is in its initial phase, it has anti-inflammatory properties. If there are ulcers you need to be careful because it burns a lot, so it must be diluted a lot. There are special propolis mouthwashes on the market, they are not easy to pass on the gums on dogs but it is good to try.
- Mallow : it is possible to pass on the gums the decoction of mallow, which can be offered instead of drinking water. Mallow is emollient and anti-inflammatory for the mucous membranes, including the gums.
Bach flowers can also be used for dog gingivitis:
- To improve the state of fear and anxiety make a combination of Mimulus and Rock rose .Â
- To help withstand the pain: Elm , Agrimony .Â
- To combat inflammation: Vervain .
Natural Tips
Behind the problem of gingivitis there is almost always a phenomenon of food allergy or intolerance , which therefore must be investigated and, as far as possible, resolved.
A 15-day cure of lactic ferments can contribute to the restoration of the bacterial flora , the cause of halitosis and intestinal fermentation, and therefore in part to the resolution of the dog’s mouth problem.
