Does milk cause breast cancer? No
A very alarming study came out a few days ago , linking milk and dairy intake to an increased risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Basically, one gets the impression that the study claims that milk causes breast cancer.
Even in the study, which evaluated the data of the famous AHS-2 survey on the diet of the Aventists, a survey widely used in America for epidemiological purposes, we read that it would be enough to consume 30 ml of milk a day to have a 30% risk. Just over half a glass equals 80-90% risk.
And already public opinion has been unleashed. Starting to talk about the famous milk hormones , present in such minimal percentages that everyone knows that there are but never anyone who takes the trouble to check what figures we are talking about. Whole milk contains about 6 nanograms of estrogen per 100 ml (and obviously contains equally minimal amounts of progesterone): or 6 billionths of a gram. When an adult woman produces 480-630 thousand nanograms herself. One man produces 136,000.
The less fat milk has, and the less traces of hormones it has.
This means that skim milk has practically zero percentages of hormones. Not that 6 billionths of a gram does anything, mind you.
In fact, to understand the correspondence with other foods, tofu contains about 25,500,000 nanograms of estrogen, in the form of phytoestrogens, always for a dose of 100 grams.
A pound of peanuts contains about 28,000.
The bread? One ounce contains 68,000.
DOES MILK CAUSE BREAST CANCER? THERE IS NO CORRELATION
But if it’s not hormones, then what would cause this relationship between milk consumption and breast cancer?
The answer is: nothing. Indeed, a recent meta -analysis that looked at 8 major studies on the correlation between breast cancer and milk found no relevant associations. And even for whole milk, no correlation was found. The study also goes against the trend with the results of the World Cancer Research Fund, which had instead emphasized an inverse relationship between consumption of dairy products and breast cancer risk .
And in fact it has caused quite a few controversies between doctors and scientists.
The association between milk consumption and breast cancer made in the study does not take into account any other dietary factors other than the consumption of soy milk. And no other factor in general. Environmental (smoking, alcohol, pregnancy, use of contraceptive pills) or family.
To suggest that cancer causes a risk of breast cancer is very serious, especially if the observation was made excluding any other data on the population taken as a sample.
